Well, been thinking about it for some time. Had to move fast on a used 2006 FJR1300 with only 600 miles on it. Found it in Cycle Trader, located in Modesto, CA only 80 miles from where I live in the Sacramento, CA area. It was traded in for a BMW 1200 boxer, RT I think.
It was priced right, I think. $11,490 plus tax and license for an OTD price of 12,632. It also included a Yamaha rear trunk so I think the price was good.
I'm coming from a Honda VTX 1800C. I've spent 5000 improving the ride and handling. I love my X but my wife says I can't have both. I'm a little nervous regarding the riding position. But, I'm going to do what I can to bring the bars back and lower the seat (Rick Mayer custom seat maybe.) I realize this is heresy for some, but I'm 60 years old with lower back problems. I will probably even come up with a driver's back rest and highway pegs.
I'm not coming from the sport bike arena, but wanted more range and better milage. My wife doesn't ride so I decided a Goldwing was more than I needed. I've been looking at the ST1300, BMW K1200 and the FJR. I don't know why I want a bike as "capable" as the FJR. My X is more than enough from 0-100.
I may be sorry, but it is a done deal. Now to turn it into a "comfortable" machine for my last fling at riding. Been riding on and off for 45 years and discovered what I really like is trips up into the mountains and twisty roads. Not that I intend to use the capabilities of the FJR to it's "fullest". But I will have more margin for error and no longer have to listen to the floorboards dragging on each curve. Time will tell if I made the right decision for me. Looking forward to the ride. I've already discovered the throttle is much smoother transitioning from idle to partial throttle than my X, so that is one problem I don't have to worry about. Oh, also plan to install a "real" cruise control. When I get done it will be a sedate tourer, suitable for one my age. I know this is heresy to some, but while the mind is willing the body is no longer able. If I'm wrong, there might be a really nice low milage 2006 FJR for sale in a few months.
I've been "lurking" in the background, doing my homework on the FJR. It's great to have a resource like this to fall back on.

Wife said I could get a new ride if I quit smoking, which I have done. I figure the savings will pay for the scoot.
