A breif history of the MSRP concept may also be relevant. My understanding is that MSRP is government mandated item because, prior to its being required, a person would walk into a vehicle dealership and be quoted any price that the dealer felt was the place to start negotiations. MSRP was instituted as a consumer protection "device." Of course, in order to protect themselves, the manufacturers/dealers set the MSRP at a price point where they would be very, very happy. In short, MSRP is a fiction that, due to the laws of unintended consequences, rather than helping consumers erroneously leads many potential buyers to assume that (a) this is the "price" (like buying a tube of tooth paste at the drug store) and (b) that the MSRP a "fair and reasonable "price."
