As an option to allow too-long tent poles to fit into whatever case (top case or pannier) you would like to store them in, you can have your shock-corded tent poles cut down to half their length, have the addtional male/female connectors added at the cuts and have the poles re-shock-corded. You add a bit of weight and, arguably, reduce the strength of the poles a bit but in most applications these issues are not a problem. Check with your local mountaneering shop if you want to have this modification performed and they can probably steer you in the right direction.
