I don't see how anyone can argue with the statement that a full face helmet offers far more protection than an open face helmet. I always advise new riders to wear a full face helmet and full protective gear when they start riding. Stats show something like 80% plus of all motorcycle accidents involve riders with less than 12 months riding experience.

With that said, I frequently ride my '04 FJR and GL1200 with an open face helmet, either a half shell or 3/4 shell. I do this knowing that I am taking an increased risk of facial injuries if I happen to go down but it also greatly increases my enjoyment of riding so I choose to take the increased risk. I've done this for many years. When I ride my GSXR, I of course always wear a fullface helmet. My son always wears a fullface helmet, whether he's riding his GSXR, my FJR, GL1200 or Nighthawk.

By all means, wear a fullface helmet if you want maximum head and facial protection. In fact, just the fact that you are concerned enough to ask a question about it tells me that you should stay with a fullface helmet. If you choose to wear an open face helmet, just be prepared to accept the consequences.
