I had a clunk under hard braking and/or hitting pot-holes. I started with retorquing the top stearing head nut and I noticed it was fairly tight already. Being curious about the space between it and the top triple clamp, I removed it and checked it out. Seemed like all was well and that gap was normal.

So with the stearing head bearings already checked out -what was loose?

I thought I would check the triple clamp fork tube pinch bolts. They were not that tight, so I loosened them off to retorque them when I noticed that when loose -the top triple clamp would rock. I tightened the center stearing nut down and saw that it still rocked and there was more of one fork leg showing than the other.

So I loosened off the center nut, balanced the triple clamp so there was the same amount of fork tube sticking up on each side, torqued the pinch bolts to spec, then torqued the center nut down.

I still have a funny feeling somethings odd, but the clunk is gone and the front end is solid. Somehow it seems to have been caused by less than proper torque on the fork leg pinch bolts.

Now if I could get rid of that squeeking when the forks compress. Bad enough my wife refers to my bike as a big-'ol pick-up truck, I don't need it sounding like one going over speed bumps. :)

Buzz: Check your TB Synch and retorque motor mount bolts. My friend R1 developed a buzz, some research lead to us looking at the mount bolts and it was obvious. Problem solved.
