When I get done it will be a sedate tourer, suitable for one my age.

Hah! You young whipper-snappers crack me up :rollin This machine is suitable for sedate or in my case, less sedate touring and canyon screaming.

I came off a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe. Although a big heavy bike, made for cruising and touring, it was a back, butt and knee breaker. I had a total of 7 different foot positions after adding various farkles and still had difficulty with ergonomics, even though at the time I was a young buck, like you :D I bought my 03 FJR on a whim (145 h.p. vs. 60 h.p. - wheelies in first 3 gears, what not to like?) I already had the RSTD, so if I didn't care for the FJR, no great loss. Since mine was number 376, I could have sold it in record time and maybe even made a few sheckels. I fell in love with it on the way home and the rest is history (for me that is). This is an all day, day after day touring, sporty, comfy, long distance mile munching, torque monster :smokin

I will probably even come up with a driver's back rest and highway pegs.

Never seen a back rest for the FJR because you won't need one, but I've seen plenty of highway pegs. Have considered them for my bike. But then the seating configuration allows one to stand up on the pegs for instant relief of old, worn out knees and aching legs ;) This can be done at just about any sane (below triple digits) speed.

My wife doesn't ride so I decided a Goldwing was more than I needed. I've been looking at the ST1300, BMW K1200 and the FJR.

ST1300 = Don't waste your money. Mini-Wing

K1200 = About the same as a 'Wing, except that the buy price on a BMW is only the entrance fee (upkeep and fixin' is extra) whereas the 'Wing just keeps tickin'. Similar performance, etc.

FJR = Like Goldie Lock's bed, just right.

That being said, on a whim I purchased an 06 GL1800 ABS a few months ago and all I can say is "WOW!" It is so much more than I expected. Another torque monster, carves canyons with the greatest of ease and has all the comforts of home, including heat, GPS, cb, stereo, cruise. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that it's a great machine - not your Daddy's Oldsmobile anymore.

So I now have two of the finest bikes ever made sitting in my garage. But then wouldn't a V-Strom be nice or maybe one of those Triumph Thruxton repli-bikes, or a neat Ural with sidecar. Or the Triumph Speed Triple (makes me wet just looking at it). So many toys, so little time. Forget the latter, since last age check one rider was in his 70's and one was 80+.

All this is said in jest, welcom to the forum and I hope you get as much pleasure from your FJR as I do. If you have any questions, we are here to help...

War-baby (no boomer here) :lol
