Now try half clutching. Clutchless shifting requires enough momentum to carry the gears into each other. But what do you do if you're just loafing along, especially like when riding double, & your not acellerating smartly enough to smoothly make it work?

Enter the half clutch. Just ride along, gently preload the shifter, leave the throttle at the same spot, then just sort of "tickle" the clutch. It should make the smoothest, quietest, most seamless shift you've ever felt! If you hear the revs shoot up between shifts, you're pulling in too far. If it gives a little clunk, you're clutching too much & letting off the throttle. When you get used to it, it feels like the clutch lever is only pulling in the free play area. Have fun, your passenger will enjoy the technique as much as you do!
